Early Reading Literacy Program Spring 2015
Nancy Newell |
Early Reading co-chairs Eileen Hanley and Patricia Van Hoegarden enlisted members and non-member friends to read to young preschool and Head Start students at local schools.
Children enjoy gathering in small groups or one-on-one with readers who take time to answer questions, point out details. and then participate in a supplemental coloring activity that makes learning fun.
The best part is when we write their names on the book and let them know it's theirs to keep.

New Start has a busy kitchen delivery schedule
Assistance League members toting kitchen equipment are a familiar site at CHAD headquarters in Wheaton. Community Advocacy Housing and Development is the largest provider of permanent affordable housing in Chicago's western suburbs and the ideal collaborator for our New Start program.
On April 30, Maria Garino delivered a full kitchen to this mother and her two daughters.
Project Stepping Stone 2015 furnishes bedroom for homeless female veteran
Project Stepping Stone Co-chairs Cathy Fisher, Sue Farrell and
Phyllis Young selected Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans for Project
Stepping Stone 2014. Members rallied behind the cause after listening to
founder Bob Adams at the October 2014 meeting and seeing the proposed plan to furnish
one of four bedrooms in Tammy's Trace, a new women’s home
in Wheaton.
Project Stepping Stone is dedicating our efforts to honor Gunnar
Hotchkin, son of member Chris Hotchkin and grandson of member Ly
Hotchkin. PFC Gunnar Hotchkin was an army combat engineer and
paratrooper, killed at 31 in Afghanistan, June 2010. He was awarded the Bronze Star among other citations, and
was considered a model soldier by his officers.Gunnar leaves behind a wife and three children.

Books & Brunch reaches new high
Becky Moats, Maureen Hegarty, Laurie Cleary 2014 Books & Brunch co-chairs |
The 18th annual Books & Brunch 2014 on Tuesday, November 11 raised more than $135,000. A five minute challenge, netted a quick $7,142, which was matched to $14,284 by a generous but anonymous member donor. Every event surpasses the previous year, with a substantial increase in revenue and record attendance. We are happily bursting at the seams thanks to our faithful master of ceremomies, NBC 5 Newscaster Dick Johnson, and a compelling line-up of authors: Dorie Greenspan, who whetted our appetite for all things French especially food; Rebecca Makkai, who's burning up the media waves with rave reviews for her Chicago-based novel The Hundred Year Old House; Chris Rylander, who made us long to be young adult readers again and Melanie Wagner, who took us on her journey as a sommelier while pregnant.
