Early Reading Literacy Program Spring 2015

Early Reading co-chairs Eileen Hanley and Patricia Van Hoegarden enlisted members and non-member friends to read to young preschool and Head Start students at local schools. 

Children enjoy gathering in small groups or one-on-one with readers who take time to answer questions, point out details. and then participate in a supplemental coloring activity that makes learning fun. 

The best part is when we write their names on the book and let them know it's theirs to keep.

Members meet at Peoples Resource Center in Westmont

Our annual meeting on May 27 was held at People's Resource Center in Westmont. Executive Director Kim Perez spoke about how PRC operates one of the largest food pantry programs in the western suburbs and provides nearly 32,000 low income DuPage County residents with basic human services and  educational programs to create paths to self-sufficiency.

Perez took Assistance League members on a tour of the beautiful new facility, which includes a well-stocked food pantry, clothes closet, computer lab, classrooms and more.

New Start has a busy kitchen delivery schedule

Assistance League members toting kitchen equipment are a familiar site at  CHAD headquarters in Wheaton. Community Advocacy Housing and Development is the largest provider of permanent affordable housing in Chicago's western suburbs and the ideal collaborator for our New Start program.

On April 30, Maria Garino delivered a full kitchen to this mother and her two daughters.

On May 4, Cathy Fisher and Shari Gillespie delivered another kitchen and helped the recipient load up her car.
